Skills Taught: proper instrumental physical "set-up" of left/right hands/body posture in balance. The elements of music = beat, rhythm, pitch, meter, music reading, writing, tempo, dynamics, articulation (Italian terms), form/structure (melody/harmony), timbre/tone color, expressive playing, artistic styles, tone/sound that connects to emotion = heart to heart.
Years Taught: 45 years
Methods Taught: Suzuki (Step by Step Suzuki Practice Method), Traditional (Essential Elements, Mueller Rusch, Etude) Books, Alfred, The College of Piping Highland Bagpipe Tutor, open to new Method books.

Devon Faith English was born, raised, and educated in New Jersey. She graduated from Bucknell
University, Lewisburg, PA with an undergraduate degree in Music / German and a Masters degree in
Education.

For the past 45 years, Miss English has lived and worked in Pennsylvania, Germany, Texas, Utah, Nevada
as a K – 12 public, private and charter school Orchestra/Choir Director, General Music, German teacher
and most recently in New Jersey as a post – COVID Strings Studio Teacher & Performing Artist on
Viola/Violin in NYC.

Devon is a lifelong teacher of the Suzuki Talent Education Method. She is a member of the Suzuki
Association of the Americas and the Suzuki Association of Utah, currently advanced certified and teaching
violin, viola, cello & bass. She also performed 15 years as a chorus soprano with the Utah Opera Company
and was a member of Musicians Union of Las Vegas (2015 – 2020) Local 369, AFM. Recently (2022-
2024) Devon performed on viola with the New York Chamber Players in the DiMenna Center and Carnegie
Weill Hall.

Miss English (a.k.a. Mrs. Colby) was one of the founding teachers of The Weilenmann School of Discovery
in Park City, UT in 2010. She was awarded “WSD Teacher of the Year” in 2013 for Music and was invited
that summer to be one of 40 conductors worldwide to participate in The Juilliard School (NYC)
Conductor’s Workshop with Maestro David Effron.

Devon is SO EXCITED to be living and teaching again in Salt Lake City, Utah! She is the proud (Suzuki)
parent/grandparent of two married sons, Carlton, assistant principal cellist of the Helena (MT) Symphony
and Neal (SLC), a professional audio-video engineer/composer/bassist & YouTube content creator.
